How long does a new cafe website take to rank? We're timing one, live.

Laptop showing a Google search for a local cafe

Every cafe owner who gets a new website asks the same question within a week: "why am I not on Google yet?" And every honest answer starts with "it depends", which satisfies nobody. So instead of telling you, we're going to show you — with a real cafe, a real launch date, and a public log we update as it happens.

The cafe is Blackies Cafe in Whangamatā, on the Coromandel. We built them a one-page website — menu, hours, map, photos — and submitted it to Google Search Console on Saturday 3 October 2026 at 2:00pm NZT. That moment is Day 0. Everything below is dated from it.

No tricks, and nothing you couldn't do yourself: no backlink building, no ads, no press. Just a fast one-page site and a Google Business Profile that agree with each other. That's the point — this is what the normal path looks like, timed.

The setup

For this experiment to mean anything, you need the starting conditions. Here they are.

What we're watching

Five searches, checked in Google Search Console and with incognito searches. Two are brand searches (people who already know the cafe's name — these should come fast) and three are discovery searches (people who don't — these are the hard ones, and the ones worth money).

The milestones

These are the checkpoints every new site passes through, in roughly this order. We'll stamp each one with the day it happens.

The log

Day 0 — Saturday 3 October 2026. Site live at cafewhangamata.co.nz. Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console at 2:00pm NZT and indexing requested for the homepage. Google Business Profile linked to the site. Now we wait — and check Search Console every few days.

New entries appear here, newest at the top, as the data comes in. The "last updated" date on this page tells you how fresh the log is.

What we expect (so you can hold us to it)

Predictions, written down before the results, because that's the only honest order to do it in. Indexing: days — usually 2 to 10 for a new site submitted via Search Console. Brand searches: page 1 within a couple of weeks of indexing; when someone searches a cafe's actual name, Google wants to show its website. Discovery searches like "cafe Whangamata": realistically weeks to a few months, because the site is competing with every established cafe in town and prominence builds with time, reviews and consistency. If it goes faster, you'll read it here. If it goes slower, you'll read that too.

The gap between those two speeds is the single most useful thing a cafe owner can understand about Google: your name ranks quickly; your category takes patience. Which is why the right time to launch a site is before you need the discovery traffic, not after.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take Google to index a new website?

Usually between 2 and 10 days for a new site submitted through Google Search Console, sometimes faster. Indexing just means Google has the page — ranking well for competitive searches takes considerably longer.

Why does a brand-name search rank faster than "cafe near me"?

When someone searches your exact business name, Google is confident your website is the answer — there is no competition for being you. Discovery searches like "cafe Whangamata" pit you against every established cafe in town, and Google weighs prominence signals (reviews, photos, consistency, time) that a new site simply hasn't accumulated yet.

Does submitting to Google Search Console make a site rank faster?

It makes indexing faster and more reliable — you're telling Google the site exists rather than waiting to be found. It doesn't boost rankings by itself, but you can't rank at all until you're indexed, so it's the right first move for every new site.
